The readings from the Psalms and 1 Kings for today describe the temple built for God, and for the people to gather to worship God, as a beautiful, grand building. There are reminders also that God cannot be contained in a building no matter how beautiful and that God’s home and protection are for everyone. Included is the image of a place where even tiny, seemingly insignificant birds can build their nests and raise their young. The Ephesians reading also reminds us of God’ protection that we should actively engage, both to make ourselves safe and to be involved in the wider world where we may encounter danger. As we gather for worship, we may be feeling uncertainties and fears. Consider how Sunday’s worship might provide a resting place and an opportunity to gather the spiritual resources needed for the coming week.
Personal Reflection:
The author knows the people in the early church do not have the means to confront the power of Rome. But what they do have is something more important. Armed with truth, righteousness, a readiness to proclaim the gospel of peace, we too can confront all that this world can throw at us.
This week, consider ways God equips us. What are you ready to do?
