“I will go with you, I will be with you whatever you have to face.” Faced with a future of nothingness, Naomi’s daughter-in-law refuses to give up on her. The biggest thing of all is something as small and as fragile as love. When a scribe asks Jesus which commandment is the first of all, Jesus is clear and concise. Love…Love God with ever fiber of your being and love your neighbor as yourself. There is no rule, theory, ambition, or new year’s resolution that is greater than this.
This week, you might look for ways to celebrate the saints past and present in your community who embodied and embody Love.
Personal Reflection:
Asked what the greatest commandment is, Jesus promptly cites two, implying they are equal. “Love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength,” and “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” Jesus goes on to say, “There is no commandment greater than these.” Given the huge plethora of commandments in the scripture and religious tradition, it is refreshing –and challenging – to hear them reduced to these simple truths. Contemplate ways in which you love God, in which you love your neighbor and love yourself.
