With all that is going on in the world, fear can feel like a constant companion these days. Much like the people in Mark’s community, we are troubled by crumbling ways of life. Our faith in national and global institutions is waning. But we are called not to follow the greatness of this world, but to rely on God’s truth and promises. God has given us the blueprints to deal with a global pandemic, the climate crisis, and urgent calls for racial justice: Care for others, treat everyone fairly, demand justice for the marginalized. What structures in today’s world might need to be rebuilt so that everyone might live in the fullness of God? In worship, learning and serving this week, we have an opportunity to encourage one another in faith and hope, to see God’s faithful presence and reign in our midst, and to take action to help make the world reflect the kingdom of God.
Personal Reflection:
Jesus emphatically tells us not to get caught up in pronouncements about the end of the world. Speaking to the disciples he points out that life will go on, and there will be horrible times, and yet the world will carry on. Over and over again scripture reminds us that it is how we live now that matters, not what might happen later.
- What stories from today’s news give you hope in uncertain times?
- This week, who are three people you can encourage and support, who are having a difficult time right now?
