This week’s readings remind us to honor God’s faithfulness, trust in God’s reign, and take action for justice. There is a preoccupation in Mark’s gospel with the question of how will the disciples live if they give everything they have in order to follow Jesus. The gospel consistently sounds the same note embodied by the widow: trust. She practices dangerous giving-how will she live if she gives everything she has? She must trust in something other than those tow coins to sustain her life. And her very act of giving reminds us to take action for justice. We can be agents of change when we demand justice in the face of oppression. What sacrifices can you make to help others? How might your giving and living better reflect your trust in God? Our actions reveal who we are and how we follow God’s wisdom in our lives. How might our worship, learning and service this week be a blessing for all?
Personal Reflection:
Jesus challenges all of us to give like the widow at the temple –to give everything we have –and warns against merely giving to impress others.
- How do you measure and understand your own giving –not only money given to charities, but giving of self?
- This week, pick at least three ways you can give to others, to organizations, or to causes you support.
